Note to travellers Dominican Republic – Malaria prophylaxis recommendation (update) Low malaria risk – exclusively in the malignant (P. falciparum) form – exists throughout the year, especially in rural areas in the western provinces such as Castañuelas, Hondo Valle and Pepillo Salcedo. There is no evidence of P. falciparum resistance to any antimalarial drug. Recommended prophylaxis in risk areas: chloroquine. Note. In Weekly epidemiological record No. 2 of 14 January 2000 (p. 9), a malaria outbreak was reported in La Altagracia (an eastern province), including Bavaro Beach area, in connection with construction activities. This outbreak has now been brought under control by the Ministry of Health. There is at present no reason for travellers staying in La Altagracia province, Bavaro Beach area, to use malaria chemoprophylaxis. For more general information on the malaria risk for travellers, please consult http:// www.who.int/ith/english/index.htm Ⅲ

Note. Ⅲ
