ECHOVIRUS 19 SURVEILLANCE U n it e d K in g d o m .— Since the beginning of the year, the number of reports of echovirus type 19 has been considerably above average and a marked increase occurred during the summer. There were 72 reports in the week ending 8 August. A variety o f symptoms were recorded during the outbreak but meningitis was by far the most common. The central nervous system was involved in 45% of cases. Thirty percent had general symptoms, 11 % had symptoms involving the respiratory tract and 9% the gastro-intestinal tract. Although reports came from all regions, the greatest number were from Birmingham where 146 cases (50 % of the total) were reported during the first 24 weeks of this year. The reports from Birmingham indicated a large number of hospital admissions and it is believed that there were many other milder cases in the community.
