LEPROSY P a p u a N e w G u in e a . — In recent years, it has been govern ment policy to use general health workers, nurses and other per sonnel to carry out case finding and administer domiciliary treat ment for the control of leprosy. The objective of the government is to treat 80% of the estimated leprosy patients by the end of 1975 and to examine 75% of the total population at least once every three years. In view of the expected shortage of medical personnel following national independence, the government will combine the services for the two major mycobacterial diseases in the country, tuber culosis and leprosy. The newly registered and cumulative number of leprosy cases per 1000 population for the years 1968-1971 are shown in Table 1. Results of prevalence surveys conducted for leprosy for the years 1968-1971 are presented in Table 2.

LÈPRE P a p u a N o u v e l l e -G u in é e .

INFLUENZA (information dated 21 March 1974). — Sporadic cases of influenza-like illness have been observed in the north of the country, mostly in school-age children and young adults. The disease is in general clinically mild. Serological evidence of infection with virus A has been obtained in three cases (out of 88 tests carried out). A l g e r ia B u l g a r ia (information dated 16 March 1974). — * 1* The influenza epidemic associated with virus B, which started in early December 1973 and reached a high incidence towards mid-Januaiy 1974, has been decreasing all over the country since early March. The incidence remained high in February, with 55 000 cases registered during the month (50 000 from 5 December to 31 January). Twentythree districts were affected. Outbreaks occurred mostly in groups of schoolchildren and young people. Strains of virus B were isolated (11 during the past week) and serological evidence of infection with virus B was obtained from a large number of sera. Serological evidence of infection with virus A was also obtained, but only from a very small number of sporadic cases.

F rance 1(situation as at 15 March 1974 reported by the Paris cen tre). — In the northern half of the country, during the past three weeks, serological evidence of a few sporadic cases associated with virus B (Paris, Reims, Nancy, Strasbourg, Lille, Rouen) or with virus A (Paris, Nancy, Lille, Caen, Brest) has continued to be obtain ed. Since early March, evidence of infection has been obtained more often with virus B than with virus A (20 cases against eight), whereas in February, a predominance of infection with virus A had been observed. (situation as at 22 March 1974 reported by the Lyons centre). — In the southern half of the country, during the past three weeks, serological evidence of a few sporadic cases associated with virus B (Lyons, Avignon, Montpellier) or with virus A (Lyons, Toulouse, Bordeaux) has continued to be obtained. R e p u b l ic o f K o r e a (information dated 18 March 1974). — Since 20 February, an epidemic of influenza-like illness, which developed first in Seoul, has spread throughout the country. The incidence reached its peak around 10 March. All age groups are affected.

Two strains of virus A have been isolated from patients. S w e d e n (information dated 17 March 1974). — 8 The new slight increase in the incidence of cases of influenza-like illness, which was first reported at the end of January in Stockholm and its suburbs, has continued to progress. Although the highest number of cases is notified in the Stockholm region, similar trends have been noticed in Gothenburg and a few districts in the centre and the west of the country. An influenza outbreak has affected 300 soldiers out of 1 000 in a unit in the Smaland province. About 12 strains of a virus antigenically close to A/Port Chalmers/1/73 have been isolated in Stockholm and its surroundings, and serological evidence of infection with virus A has been ob tained from several regions of the country (whereas infection with virus B, which occurred previously,8 disappeared towards midFebruary). 1 Ses No. 10, p. 85 1 See No. 10, p. 86. • See No. 3, p. 29.

W o r l d I n f l u e n z a C e n t r e , L o n d o n . — 1 Strains of virus A, isolated during the outbreaks which occurred this winter in Fin land, the Democratic Republic of Germany and the Federal Re public of Germany (Hannover), have been tested by haemagglutination inhibition. They all show remarkably low HI titres with anti-A/HongKong/1/68 serum (much lower than those shown by A/Port ChaImers/1/73), but they react well with anti-A/England/ 42/72 and anti-A/Port Chalmers/1/73 sera. The reactions appear to correspond to a further antigenic drift away from A/HK/1/68 (H3N2), which seems to be a continuation of the drift which gave first A/England/42/72 and then the New Zealand strains (A/Port Chalmers/1/73 and A/Dunedin/4/73). Table 1 shows the results of these HI tests.

C e n t r e m o n d ia l d e l a G r ip p e , L o n d r e s . » Voir N° 5, 1974, pp. 41-44.
