INFLUENZA WHO C ollaborating C entre for R eference and R esearch on Influenza , L ondon . — 1 Whereas strains of virus A isolated during the outbreaks which occuned in the third quarter of 1975 in Central African Republic (Bangui)2 and Western Australia3 are antigenically close to A/Port Chalmers/1/73, a strain recently isolated in Singapore, A/Singapore/665/75, is close to the new variant A/New Guinea/1/75 from Papua New Guinea (haemagglutination-inhibition tests). This new variant has also been isolated in Taiwan, the Philippines and Victoria in Australia. Of 258 sera from the United Kingdom, 47% gave a titre of HI antibodies <10 with A/Singapore/665/75, 44% a titre between 10 and 20, and 9 % a titre >40. The corresponding percentages for 114 sera from the United Kingdom tested with A/Victoria/3/75 (also close to the variant A/New Guinea) were 68 %, 28 % and 4%. These figures suggest that only a low immunity exists in the United Kingdom against strains close to the recent variant A/New Guinea. 1 See No. 45, p. 391. * See No. 41, p. 350. » See No. 38, p. 331.

1Voir N° 45, p. 391. *VoirN“ 41, p. 350. •Voir N» 38, p. 331.
