4 NOTES ON NOMENCLATURE AND ON DISCUSSIONS Note on Nomenclature Names of pesticides Common names for pesticides recommended by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) are used wherever possible. Where such names are not available, those recommended by the British Standards Institution (BSI) are used. Other common names, proprietary names, acronyms, etc. are used only if neither an ISO nor a BSI name is available for a given insecticide. Errors and omissions excepted, all designations not approved by either ISO or BSI are indicated in the text by a dagger (t), proprietary names being distinguished by an initial capital letter; all designations thus marked are identified by chemical name in the Glossary on pages 447-448. General chemical nomenclature In general, the chemical nomenclature used throughout this special issue of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization follows the IUPAC rules as interpreted by the American Chemical Society. In the interests of speedy publication, however, no consistent attempt to achieve complete uniformity has been made, with the exception of names that occur frequently in more than one paper. Note on the Summary Records of Discussions With the exception of Session XI, which was recorded on magnetic tape, the summary records of discussions were compiled from notes made by the contributors during the Conference. During the subsequent editing process, a certain amount of abridgement and reorganization was undertaken. One of the consequences is that, although most of the comments made in the General Discussion periods of Sessions I-X are included, they are not necessarily reproduced under the heading of the Session in which they were made. Questions asked and answers given during the short discussion periods following the presentation of individual papers have been omitted if the answers are con- tained in the more complete versions of the papers printed herein. Owing to limitation of space, the record of Session XI, which was devoted entirely to discussion, has been severely abridged. Much of the task of abridgement and reorganization was undertaken by Dr W. N. Aldridge. Unfor- tunately it was not possible, in view of the necessity of publishing this special triple number of the Biulletin of the World Health Organization within the agreed-upon time limit, for contributors to check proofs of the discussion.
