DENGUE HAEMORRHAGIC FEVER M alaysia . — As of 7 February 1976, eight localities had been defined as epidemic for dengue haemorrhagic fever. In the week ending 24 January, eight cases ranging from 3 to 25 years o f age had been reported from the village o f Koh, Sitiawan, State o f Perak. This is one o f the more severely affected areas and, by the end of January, there were 19 cases with two deaths in a population of approximately 4 000. Ten cases, four o f which were fatal, were reported in the week ending 7 February in villages of Johor Bharu and Ipoh.

FIÈVRE HÉMORRAGIQUE DENGUE M alaisie . — A la date du 7 février 1976, huit localités avaient été déclarées zones d ’épidémie de fièvre hémorragique dengue. Au cours de la semaine terminée le 24 janvier, huit cas avaient été signalés chez des personnes âgées de 3 à 25 ans dans le village de Koh, Sitiawan, Etat de Perak. Il s’agit d'un des secteurs le plus sévèrement touchés et, à la fin de janvier, on comptait 19 cas dont deux mortels pour une population d ’environ 4000 personnes. Dix autres cas, dont quatre à issue fatale, ont été signalés au cours de la semaine terminée le 7 février dans des villages proches de Johor Bharu et Ipoh. L ’épidémie semble commencer plus tôt cette année que ce n ’a été le cas récemment, et les tendances observées dans deux régions (Perak et Wilayah Persekutuan) sont particulièrement préoccupantes. L’indice d ’habitations infestées par Aedes aegypti s’établissait à 32 % et l’indice de Breteau à 32 % également pour la semaine N° 30 de l’année 1975. Il y aurait lieu d ’entreprendre d ’urgence des opérations larvicides et imagocides, y compris des applications VUF.

The epidemic appears to be starting earlier in the year than in previous years, and the trends in Perak and Wilayah Persekutuan especially are o f concern. The reported Aedes aegypti house index was 32 % and the Breteau index 32 % in week 30 of 1975.

It would appear that there is an urgent need for the implementa­ tion of both larval and adult control measures including ULV insecticide applications.
