CHOLERA SURVEILLANCE J a p a n . — An outbreak of V. cholerae, biotype eltor, serotype Inaba, suspected to be due to the consumption of food has been reported by the National Health Administration. As of 15 November, 48 cases including 31 healthy carriers have been notified in Tokyo and nine prefectures; the first one was discovered in Chiba Prefecture on 4 November. With the exception o f four healthy carriers detected on 10 November in Mobara city, Chiba Prefecture, all affected persons ate the suspected food. Food from the same source was served in the one hall in Tokyo for several wedding receptions during the period 28 October to 5 November. About 16000 stool examinations were carried out in persons who had consumed the suspected food and their families. About 1000 additional stool specimens were examined from inhabitants of Mobara, where four healthy carriers without apparent direct or indirect contact with other infected persons had been detected. Investigations are under way to establish the manner of contamina tion of the suspected food. The reception hall has been closed and all necessary preventive measures have been taken. No secondary cases have been reported. E d it o r ia l N o t e : Importation of cholera can occur in any country but, in one like Japan with a high level of basic hygiene and health services capable of prompt and detailed epidemiological investiga tion, the disease will be rapidly contained. The present outbreak is considered as a localized episode which does not present any risks from the point of view of international travel,

SURVEILLANCE DU CHOLÉRA J a p o n .
