O U TB R EA K NEW S Ebola, Uganda. As of 18 October, the Minis try of Health had reported 94 cases, includ ing 39 deaths. The cases are focused on Aswa county and Gulu municipality in Gulu dis trict. Unconfirmed reports of cases in the neighbouring district of Kitgum are being investigated by the operational task force. Laboratory testing carried out at the Nation al Institute of Virology in South Africa has indicated that the cause of the outbreak is the Ebola virus. These are the first cases of Ebola ever reported in Uganda. A national task force for the control of viral haemorrhagic fevers has been established under the authority of the Ministry of Health, with WHO coordinating the international response to the outbreak, in conjunction with its partners in the Global TUert and Re sponse Network.' Teams from Médecins sans frontières international. Epicentre (France) and the WHO collaborating centre at the Centers for Disease Control and Pre vention (United States) are participating in the response. Epidemiologists from the WHO Regional Office for Africa and the WHO office in Kam pala (Uganda) are already assisting with in vestigation and implementation of control measures. Epidemiologists from WHO headquarters in Geneva are joining them in order to provide further expertise in clinical management of cases and in the field investi gation of the outbreak. Surveillance is under way in Gulu and isolation facilities are in place. Training courses for district health personnel in unaffected districts will be held. Initial funding for this rapid response The Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network is a technical partnership of national and international institutions and smaller networks who mobilize and pool their resources so that outbreaks of potential international importance are detected, verified and responded to efficiently and effectively by the international com munity.

Les cas sont regroupés dans la circonscription d’Aswa et la municipalité de Gulu dans le district de Gulu. Le groupe spécial d’intervention mène une en quête suite à des rapports non confirmés de cas dans le district voisin de Kitgum. Les analyses de laboratoire effectuées en Afrique du Sud, à l’Ins titut national de virologie, ont indiqué que la flambée est due au virus Ebola. C’est la première fois que des cas de fièvre Ebola sont signalés en Ouganda. Un groupe national spécial pour la lutte contre les fièvres hémorragiques virales a été mis en place sous la direction du Ministère de la santé, TOMS coordonnant l’intervention internatio nale face à la flambée, de concert avec ses par tenaires du Réseau mondial de vigilance et d’intervention.' Des équipes de Médecins sans frontières international, d’Epicentre (France) et du centre collaborateur OMS aux Centers fo r Di sease Control and Prevention (Etats-Unis) par ticipent à l’intervention. Des épidémiologistes du Bureau régional OMS de l’Afrique et du bureau de l’OMS à Kampala (Ougemda) apportent déjà leur concours aux analyses et à la mise en œuvre des mesures de lutte. Ils vont être rejoints pai des épidémiolo gistes venant du Siège de TOMS, à Genève, qui apporteront une aide spécialisée supplémentai re à la prise en charge clinique des cas et à Tétude de la flambée sur le terrain. La surveillance est en cours à Gulu et des centres d’isolement ont été établis. Une formation destinée au personnel soignant de district sera tenue dans les zones non encore affectées. Les premiers fonds destinés Le Réseau mondial de vigilance et d'intervention contre les flambées épidémiques est un partenariat technique regroupant des organismes nationaux et internationaux et d'autres réseaux qui mobilisent et met tent en commun leurs ressources pour que la communauté internationale prenne des mesures efficaces de dépistage, de vérification et d'inter vention en cas de flambée susceptible d'avoir une portée internationale.
