INFLUENZA U nited K in g d o m . — The severe influenza A outbreak m the winter o f 1969-1970 was succeeded by a long period of calm. When that outbreak died away a t the end of January 1970, influenza A virus all but disappeared from the laboratory reports; England was largely free of influenza A virus during the succeeding summer and winter and in the early months of 1971 Recently, however, there has been a reappearance of infections with influenza A confirmed by virus isolation and by antibody measurement In terms of numbers this resurgence has not amounted to much In May, 24 infections were reported, in June there were 39, and in July, 23. Individuals in all age-groups have been affected 25 of the 86 infections have been in children under the age of four, 9 in older children aged between 5 and 14 years, and the remaining 52 in young and middle-aged adults. The symptoms are similar to those en countered in winter outbreaks Upper and lower respiratory symptoms and pyrexia have been the manifestations most often reported. One middle-aged man died of pneumonia and another of respiratory failure, a child of five years who developed broncho pneumonia also died As a rule infections with influenza A virus are uncommon m summer and the number of infections this year— small though it is—has been unusual for the summer months

GRIPPE R oyaume -U n i .

Prognostications about the prevalence o f influenza during the approaching winter have often been misleading and no one can be sure what will happen this time. However if the coming season is to conform to the usual pattern there may be some influenza this winter as the virus A2/Hong Kong/68 was absent during the winter 1970-1971, and England seldom enjoys two influenza-free winters in succession.

(Based on/D ’apres: Public Health Laboratory St vice and/et British Medical Journal, 1971, 4, 5 9) W estern S amoa — From mid-August to the second part of September, there has been an epidemic of influenza-like disease m the country Up to 29 August, 9 529 cases were reported from all districts, 534 patients developed complications, mostly pneu monia, and among them, there were 11 deaths (mostly old people) The regression started by mid-September S amoa-O ccidental — De la mi-août à la seconde quinzaine de septembre, une épidémie d ’affections d ’allure grippale s’est produite dans le pays Jusqu’au 29 août, 9 529 cas furent notifies dans tous les districts, 534 malades présentèrent des complications, surtout des broncho-pneumonies, et parmi eux, on enregistra 11 décès (surtout chez des personnes âgées) La regression commença vers la mi-septembre.

Serological evidence of infection with virus A2/Hong Kong/68 was obtained from one patient.
