POLIOMYELITIS SURVEILLANCE Bolivia . — Information has been received concerning an epi­ demic of poliomyelitis in Bolivia which began in January o f this year. A total of 202 cases and 23 deaths had been reported through the end of April for which the distribution by departments is the follow­ ing: Cochabamba, 20 cases; La Paz, 40 cases anc 1 death; Oruro, 47 cases; Potosi, 9 cases and 1 death; Santa Cruz, 84 cases and 19 deaths; and Tarija, 2 cases with 2 deaths. D ominican R epublic . — The Ministry of Public Health and Welfare has reported an outbreak of poliomyelitis which began in December 1974. The distribution by month for the 74 cases reported up to the end o f May 1975 is as follows: December, 5; January, 5; February, 10; March, 21; April, 19; May, 7; and 7 of unknown date. The areas most affected have been the District of Santo Domin­ go with 53 % of the cases and the provinces of San Cristôbal with eight cases and La Vega with seven. The Government has taken adequate measures to control the outbreak by initiating a pro­ gramme of mass vaccination in the preschool population which has been most affected by the epidemic.

A la fin d’avril, il avait été signalé au total 202 cas, dont 23 mortels; en voici la répartition par départements: Cochabamba, 20 cas; La Paz, 40 cas dont 1 mortel; Oruro, 47 cas; Potosi, 9 cas dont 1 mortel; Santa Cruz, 84 cas dont 19 mortels; et Tarija, 2 cas mortels. R épublique D ominicaine . — Le Ministère de la Santé publique et de la Prévoyance sociale signale une épidémie de poliomyélite qui a commencé en décembre 1974. A la fin de mai 1975, il avait été notifié 74cas, répartis comme suit: décembre, 5; janvier,5; février,10; mars, 21; avril, 19; mai,7; date inconnue, 7.

Les régions les plus touchées ont été le District de Santo Domingo avec 53% des cas et les provinces de San Cristôbal (huit cas) et de La Vega (sept cas). Le Gouvernement a pris des mesures adéquates pour endiguer l’épidémie en lançant un programme de vaccination de masse dans la population la plus affectée: les enfants d’âge préscolaire.
