Chairperson: Dr Ren Minghui (China) Item 13. Noncommunicable diseases (continued) The discussion on noncommunicable diseases was concluded. Item 17. Item 16. Emergencies and disasters Coordination of the work of the World Health Assembly, the Executive Board and the Regional Committee • WHA64.10 Strengthening national health emergency and disaster management capacities and resilience of health systems The Regional Director introduced document WPR/RC62/13 Rev. 1, outlining the current situation and the issues in the Western Pacific Region regarding management of emergencies and disasters. He also asked the Regional Committee to take note of World Health Assembly resolution WHA64.10 on strengthening national health emergency and disaster management capacities and resilience of health systems. Presentations were given by the representatives of Japan and New Zealand on their experiences in dealing with the recent devastating earthquakes in their countries. Interventions were made by representatives of the following Member States: Australia; Brunei Darussalam; China; Malaysia; Mongolia; Papua New Guinea; the Philippines; Samoa; Solomon Islands; Tonga; the United States of America; and Viet Nam. Consideration of draft resolutions The Chairperson invited the Committee to consider the draft resolution on the Proposed programme budget 2012–2013 (WPR/RC62/Conf. Paper No. 1). The draft resolution was adopted (WPR/RC62.R1). The Chairperson invited the Committee to consider the draft resolution on Expanding and intensifying noncommunicable disease prevention and control (WPR/RC62/Conf. Paper No. 2). Amendments received from Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America were read out by the Rapporteur for the English Language. The draft resolution was adopted as amended (WPR/RC62.R2). Item 10. Antimicrobial resistance The Regional Director presented document WPR/RC62/5, concerning the mounting threat of antimicrobial resistance globally, and invited the Committee to discuss the six-point Policy Package to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance, issued by the DirectorGeneral on World Health Day, and to consider ways to support Member States in developing plans to fight antimicrobial resistance. Interventions were made by representatives of the following Member States: Australia; Brunei Darussalam; China; Fiji; Hong Kong (China); Japan; the Lao People's Democratic Republic; Malaysia; New Zealand; the Republic of Korea; Samoa; Singapore; Solomon Islands; the United States of America; and Viet Nam.

Traditional medicine The Director, Programme Management, presented document WPR/RC62/6 on traditional medicine and invited the Regional Committee to review and consider endorsement of the draft Regional Strategy for Traditional Medicine in the Western Pacific (2011–2020). Interventions were made by representatives of the following Member States: Brunei Darussalam; China; the Federated States of Micronesia; Fiji; Hong Kong (China); Japan; the Lao People's Democratic Republic; Macao (China); Malaysia; the Marshall Islands; Mongolia; Palau; the Philippines; the Republic of Korea; Samoa; the United States of America; Vanuatu; and Viet Nam. It was agreed that the agenda item would remain open for further informal consultations on some issues. Item 12. Food safety The Regional Director presented document WPR/RC62/7, outlining the regional situation regarding food safety and introducing the draft Western Pacific Regional Food Safety Strategy (2011–2015). He invited the Regional Committee to review and consider endorsement of the Strategy. Interventions were made by representatives of the following Member States: Australia; China; Fiji; France; Hong Kong (China); Japan; Malaysia; Papua New Guinea; the Philippines; Samoa; Solomon Islands; the United States of America; and Viet Nam. Item 15. Progress reports on technical programmes 15.1 Regional Action Plan for Malaria Control and Elimination in the Western Pacific (2010–2015) 15.2 Dengue fever and dengue haemorrhagic fever prevention and control 15.3 Mental health 15.7 Expanded Programme on Immunization The Director, Programme Management, presented reports on four WHO programmes—malaria control, dengue, the Expanded Programme on Immunization and mental health—noting that he would address essential medicines, the Asia Pacific Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, human resources for health and the Meeting of Ministers of Health for the Pacific Island Countries in a later meeting. He asked Member States to note the progress detailed in the reports and invited their comments. Interventions were made by representatives of the following Member States: France; Japan; Malaysia; Vanuatu; and Viet Nam.
