MALARIA SURVEILLANCE Belgium . — In 1983, 108 cases of malaria, all imported, were recorded by a network of 101 microbiology laboratories. Seventy per cent of the cases were recorded by the reference laboratory while the others came from 14 different laboratories. The annual number of cases is constantly increasing, rising from an average of 28.2 cases between 1971 and 1976, to 50 cases between 1977 and 1981. Sixty-eight per cent of cases where the sex is stated are males. The 20 to 29 years age group was the most affected, accounting for 32% of the cases where the age is stated. Eighty-one per cent o f cases whose origin is mentioned were imported from Africa ( Table 1); 37% o f these are persons who had stayed in Zaire
SURVEILLANCE DU PALUDISME Belgique.

The parasite species most often incriminated is Plasmodium falciparum (73% of cases where the species is mentioned). Next comes P m a x (13%), followed by P. ovale (6%) and P. malariae (4% ).
All the cases reported were contracted naturally (anopheles bites); no induced (e.g. caused by transfusion) or congenital cases were reported. A P. falciparum infection was found in a 27-yearold man who had never been in a malarious area and had never been given a blood transfusion. The patient was a baggage handler at Zaventem airport, so that this is probably another case o f “air port malaria” due to the importation o f infected anopheles. One death was reported, that of a man in the 30-39 years age group returning from Kenya; the P falciparum responsible was reported to be chloroquine-resistant.
