Notable changes over this period are the recent increase in the number of cases in New South Wales so that about one-third of the cases in 1977 and 1978 occurred in this state, and the progressive fall in the number of cases in the Northern Territory since 1974, the year of the cyclone Tracy. In 1978, of the 308 cases for which the parasite species was reported, 227 (73.7%) were due to P. vivax, 74 (24.0%) to P. falciparum, 3 (1.0%) to P. malartae, 1 to P. ovale and 3 (1.0%) were mixed infections. The distribution of malaria cases, according to year and parasite species is shown in Table 2.

During the period 1970-1976, the infections with P. falciparum accounted for about 10 % or less of the total number o f cases whereas in 1977 this proportion increased to 19 % (including mixed infections) and to 25% in 1978. This increase in the number of cases of falciparum malaria accounted for the increase in the total number of cases in 1977 and 1978 compared with 1976 and 1977 respectively. The countries of origin o f the 307 imported cases were: SouthWest Pacific countries 191 (Papua New Guinea 184, Solomon Islands 5, New Hebrides 1, country of origin not specified 1), South-East Asian countries 81 (India 30, Indonesia 20, Malaysia 3, Sri Lanka 2, Nepal 1, Viet Nam 1. country of origin not specified 24,, other Asian countries 7 (Turkey 2, Afghanistan 1, Iran 1, Pakistan 1, Middle East 2), Africa 11 (country of origin not specified), Panama 1. For 16 cases, the area of origin was not specified.

Classification of all cases: Imported 350, Indigenous 10, Introduced 6, Not classified 4.

In 1977, three introduced cases were recorded in North Queens land at Red Island Point. Exhaustive epidemiological investiga tions and remedial measures were taken. There were no subsequent cases. In 1978, all cases in the receptive area were imported (Papua New Guinea 5 P .f and 5 P.v., India 3 P .v., Indonesia 3 P.v.). Epidemio logical investigations and radical treatment were carried out for all cases. There are considerable population movements between the malarious western Province of Papua New Gumea and the Torres Strait area. To reduce the malariogenic potential o f the area, DDT is applied indoors once a year before the start o f the trans mission season on the Torres Strait Islands and an attempt is made to take blood specimens from and administer radical treatment to all arrivals from Papua New Guinea. Careful attention is being paid to imported cases of P. falciparum resistant to 4-ammoq uinolines.
