Being the final year of the 1980-82 contract, the yeat was perhaps cha.raeterised by the work and. negotiations which took p3-ace for the 1981-85 a,erial eontract. twenty nine compa,nies responded^ to the various ad.vertise- ments appearing a"t the enrl of November 19BI and of these, ten were invj.ted to bid. A fuIl weekrs briefing session was held in the Programme area from 22-27 February when 7 of the 10 companies j-nvited to bid were represented., The Invitation to Bid. d.ocwnent rvas d,l-scussed. in d,etail and. visits to Sobo- Dioula.sso and. tarna-KaJftr were made. O: the lJth May 1982 the blds r,rere opened j.n Geneva. tr'ive bids were presented - A.F.T.A.,llf,'[A]3, E\TERGfiEEI'J and.2 fron CCC/VIIfiNG. After 4 weeks of d.eliberations the Contract Selection Beview Ccmm:ittee recommend.ed. to the Director General that the second. bid of CCC/Vikihg (Hughes !00C and" Sr.rbo Thrush aircraft) be awardecl the 198145 aerial contract. Accordingly in July the con'bract was ar,rard,ed. to this company. AEB-IAL oPEqATI0I\TS Durirrg the year a total ct 5689.2 helicopter hours and 966,2 fixed-tring hours were flown, i.e. onhf 409.2 helicopter excess hours above the guaranteed hour figure of 5280 helicopter hours and only 56.2 excess fixed.- wing hor:rs above the guauanteecl fixed.-r+ing figure of 900.0. This was due to the wide scale use (fre6copter and fixecl-wing) of B.T. in Phase fV and. part of Phase I cross- resistance area. fn 19Bl onl1y 7987.2 litres rf B.Tr were released by heli- eopter, in 1982 2r21986.6 litres were released' by fixeci.-wing and' helicopter, an almost thirty-fo1d- increase. Srior to the wet season stalting, it had. been envisaged that 10-Cay B'T' cyeles would be attempted. Holrever, due to the logistical complexities it proved. clifficult to organi ze and weei:1y treatment was mad-e by helicopter with the fjxed.-wing startinSg to operate i-n micl-August.
