2017 Issue No. 24 - Week 48 (as of 4 December 2017) HIGHLIGHTS Joint National-International Review of Surveillance for Vaccine-preventable Diseases in Viet Nam Joint National-international team of experts conducted review of surveillance for vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD) in Viet Nam from 20 to 30 November 2017. The objectives of the review were: 1. to assess the status and identify challenges of VPD surveillance; and 2. to develop a national plan to strengthen VPD surveillance. The main focus of the review was surveillance for acute flaccid paralysis and acute fever and rash cases, as well as review of the overall surveillance for vaccine-preventable diseases. The review team concluded that VPD surveillance in Viet Nam is strong enough in terms of staffing, well established structure and laboratory performance. To address identified challenges the review team recommended: 1. to improve collaboration between preventive and curative sectors of health care; 2. to improve awareness of key players about VPDs surveillance goal and objectives; and 3. to improve practice of specimen collection and transportation. 5.5 5.0 4.5 4.0 3.5 3.0 2.5 40% 60% 80%
