Sexually Transmitted Diseases, HIV infections and AIDS (Resolution)

REPORT OF THE REGIONAL COMMITTEE 2S 4. REQUESTS the Regional Director; (I) to ensure logistical support for disease outbreak response including regional stockpiles of basic supplies and equipment, emergency transportation, and dispatch of experts during outbreaks; (2) to facilitate rapid exchange of information among Member States on disease situations and on country experiences in disease outbreak management; (3) to maintain WHO's support for surveillance and epidemiology and for training in new information technology; (4) to continue the evaluation of country visits by members of the Sub-Committee to fully determine their value to WHO, the participants and the host countries and to report the findings of the evaluation to the Regional Committee at its forty-ninth session; S. REQUESTS the Sub-Committee, as part of its terms of reference in 1998, to review and analyse the impact of WHO's cooperation with Member States in the field of Healthy Cities-Healthy Islands, with particular reference to health information systems; 6. DECIDES that the countries to be visited in 1998 should be Fiji and Malaysia. Fourth Meeting, 24 September 1997 WPRlRC48/SRl4 WPRlRC48.R3 SEXUALL Y TRANSMITTED DISEASES, HIV INFECTION AND AIDS The Regional Committee, Having considered the annual report on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), HIV infection and AIDS;I Noting the expected increase in HIV infections and AIDS cases in the next few years in the Region, and the potential impact on health systems; Noting also the high incidence of STDs in most Member States of the Region and the scientific evidence that STD prevention and control can reduce HIV incidence, in particular among commercial sex workers and their clients; Noting with concern the increasingly high incidence of STDs and HIV infections among youth; 1. URGES Member States; (I) to strengthen commitment for the support of SID prevention and control programmes; (2) to mobilize additional resources for these programmes; (3) to strengthen the epidemiological surveillance ofSTDs, HIV infection and AIDS; I Document WPRlRC48/5. 26 REGIONAL COMMITIEE: FORlY-EIGHTH SESSION (4) to further strengthen STD and HIV health promotion campaigns, prevention and control programmes. particularly those targeting commercial sex workers, their clients, injecting drug users and youth; 2. REQUESTS the Regional Director: (I) to further strengthen technical collaboration with Member States in the prevention and control ofSTDs and HIV/AIDS and strengthen the technical capability within WHO; (2) to continue to improve the regional surveillance system on STDs, HIV and AIDS; (3) to intensify WHO participation in UNAIDS theme group activities at country level, and coordination and implementation of UNAIDS activities at regional and national levels; (4) to continue to identify and mobilize resources for STD and HIV/AIDS activities, particularly for youth; (5) to continue to report annually to the Regional Committee on the situation of STDs and HIV/AIDS in the Region, and on developments relating to UNAIDS.
