In C e n t r a l A f r i c a , w h i l e s t u d i e s have p r o v i d e d many f a c t s c o n c e r n i n g p o t e n t i a l v e c t o r s i n the C e n t r a l A f r i c a n R e p u b l i c , Cameroon and Gabon , t h e r e have been very few s t u d i e s on the Congo or Chad ^, I t c o u l d be s a i d however, t h a t g e n e r a l l y s p e a k i n g , v e c t o r s are present everywhere.

Aedes a e g y p t i has been found everywhere i n towns, most o f t e n as a p e r i d o m e s t i c p e s t , s i n c e the problem of water s t o r a g e does not a r i s e i n the humid zones of C e n t r a l A i r i c a . A. a f r i c a n u s has been w e l l s t u d i e d , above a l l i n Cameroon and the C e n t r a l A f r i c a n Republic, In those c o u n t r i e s i t i s very abundant and very a g g r e s s i v e near the ground (palm g r o v e s , marshy l o w l a n d s , f o r e s t g a l l e r i e s ) . I t b i t e s day and n i g h t , but m o s t l y a t dawn and dusk, A. s i m p s o n i i s a l s o p e r i d o m e s t i c i n i t s e c o l o g y (banana p l a n t a t i o n s ) . It i s active d u r i n g the d a y - t i m e but becomes l e s s a n t h r o p o p h i l i c from e a s t t o west. Where i t i s a n t h r o p o p h i l i c , i t may cause t r a n s m i s s i o n between humans and thus s t a r t an e p i d e m i c ( E t h i o p i a , 1960-1962).

S t u d i e s a r e s t i l l needed i n o r d e r t o d e t e r m i n e how y e l l o w f e v e r v i r u s m a i n t a i n s i t s e l f in i t s sylvatic cycle. E f f o r t s must be c o n c e n t r a t e d on r e g i o n s where i t i s s u s p e c t e d t h a t the v i r u s i s permanently a c t i v e : Cameroon (Ayos Region) and the C e n t r a l A f r i c a n R e p u b l i c (South West Region) ^. 2 . 2 .1 West A f r i c a Historical review

U n l i k e C e n t r a l A f r i c a , West A f r i c a has known v a s t e p i d e m i c s o f y e l l o w f e v e r d u r i n g i t s history. The r e v i v a l o f y e l l o w f e v e r f i r s t became m a n i f e s t a t D i o u r b e l i n S e n e g a l i n the form o f an e p i d e m i c i n 1 9 6 5 . In 1 9 6 9 , t h e r e was an e p i d e m i c i n f i v e West A f r i c a n c o u n t r i e s : M a l i , Upper V o l t a , N i g e r i a , Togo and Ghana. In 1 9 7 0 , y e l l o w f e v e r was r e c o r d e d i n Ghana, N i g e r i a and Togo and i n 1 9 7 2 a g a i n i n Ghana. On the o t h e r hand, no case o f y e l l o w f e v e r has been r e p o r t e d from I v o r y Coast s i n c e 1 9 4 8 , from Dahomey s i n c e 1 9 5 1 , from Guinea s i n c e 1 9 5 2 and from S i e r r a Leone s i n c e 1 9 5 5 , 2.1 Present situation

The whole s u r v e i l l a n c e system depends i n e f f e c t on the i n t e r e s t shown i n t h i s d i s e a s e b d o c t o r s i n t h e s e n t i n e l h o s p i t a l s and the p r e v e n t i v e m e d i c i n e d e p a r t m e n t s . So f a r , the svstem has not produced t h e r e s u l t s a n t i c i p a t e d , so much so t h a t a p a r t from s t u d i e s c a r r i e d out by a few teams, knowledge o f the e p i d e m i o l o g i c a l s i t u a t i o n i n r e g a r d t o y e l l o w f e v e r i n west A f r i c a has made l i t t l e p r o g r e s s .
