SURVEILLANCE DE LA GRIPPE I rlande (6 février 1981). — Plusieurs épidémies de grippe loca

influenza among adults and school children were reported during December 1980 and January 1981. Of the strains investigated by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza in London, eight were reacting equally well with sera prepared against A/Texas/1/77 (H3N2)-like and A/Bangkok/1/79 (H3N2)-like strains. One poorly reacting strain was closest to A/Brazil/11/78 (H1N1). S weden (1 February 1981). — 1 The incidence of influenza is steadily increasing and the disease is spreading west and north. All age groups are affected but the attack rates among school children have increased markedly. Outbreaks have been reported in some military units. Apart from influenza A (H3N2) virus an increasing number of influenza A (H1N1) strains have been isolated, mainly from persons born 1958 and later. There has also been an increasing number of laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza in the very youngest, i.e. children bom in 1979 and 1980, some with pneumonia. Switzerland (10 February 1981). —1 A high number of cases of influenza-like illness were notified in the first seven weeks of 1981. Since the end of January several cases have been confirmed as influenza by virus isolation. With the exception of one influenza B virus, these have been influenza A of the H3N2 or H1N1 subtype. 1 See No. 1. p. 5.
