GRIPPE (suite) Europe (suite) F rance.
INFLUENZA (continued) Europe (continued) F rance. — 1 During the week ending 1 March 1969, the incidence of influenza-like disease increased in Paris and the surrounding area, and in the east, west and south-west of the country. In addition, during the last week of February and the first week of March, localized outbreaks and sporadic cases were reported in Lyons and the Departments of Ain and Haute-Savoie. All agegroups were affected. The disease was generally mild.
Strains of virus A2/Hong Kong/68 were isolated and serological evidence of infection with virus A2/Hong Kong/68 was obtained.
I taly (information dated 8 March 1969). — One strain of virus A2/Hong Kong/68 was isolated in Genova during the last week of February. Only sporadic cases of respiratory disease have been reported so far in Italy, and no other case of influenza infection has been confirmed by laboratory. F ederal R epublic of G ermany, (information dated 12 March 1969). — 2 Since the week ending 1 March, an epidemic of influenza
like disease, which started in the area of AachenjKoblenz has spread to the whole Nordrhein-Westfalen; local outbreaks are in particular observed in the Ruhr. An epidemic is also reported in Hannover and several regions of Niedersachsen, and in the Hamburg area. In Hessen, only a few localized outbreaks have been notified, and in Bayern the incidence is slightly elevated, but is tending to decrease in some places. Virus A2/Hong Kong/68 has only been sporadically isolated. Serological evidence of infection with virus A2/Hong Kong/68 has been sporadically obtained. In Niedersachsen, virus B is also associated with the epidemic 3; it was mostly isolated from children. On the whole, however, the etiology is not clear.

The form of presentation in the Weekly Epidemiological Record does not imply official endorsement or acceptance by the World Health Organization of the status or boundaries of the territories as listed or described. It has been adopted solely for the purpose of providing a convenient geographic basis for the information herein. The same qualification applies to all notes and explana tions concerning the geographic units for which data are provided.
VIRAL’ HEPATITIS — CANADA Viral hepatitis has been reportable in all ten provinces since 1954. Prior to 1959, only infectious hepatitis was reported. Subsequently, serum hepatitis was included. As of 1 January 1969, infectious and serum hepatitis are being reported separately. There is considerable variation in the completeness of reporting from province to province and, probably, from time to time. The Dominion Bureau of Statistics publishes the information that is submitted and although these reports are incomplete, study of the figures reveals definite trends and patterns that contribute to an understanding of the disease.

Age Specific Case Rates 1968 The pattern in 1968 has remained the same as in previous years with the rates highest for 5-9 year olds and with 10-14 year olds next (Table 2). For Newfoundland the rates for these age groups, and for those immediately before and immediately after were greatly in excess of those for other provinces. The epidemic in this eastern province was concentrated among young people — 79.7% of those for whom age and sex was reported were 14 or younger, 93.6% were 24 or younger. Only 2.2% were over 39. In contrast, those, over 39 in other provinces were 9.7% in British Columbia, 12.4% in Alberta, 12.4% in Saskatchewan, 21.7% in Manitoba and 3.0% in New Brunswick. As in previous years in Newfoundland, the 5-9 year age group contributed the largest number of cases (777). Cases Reported per Week 1967-1968 Throughout 1968, for Canada as a whole, the number of hepatitis cases per week has been consistently above the. number for the corresponding week in 1967 (Fig. 1). Weekly case counts for 1967 were remarkably dose to the median for 1963-67 until a sharp rise took place during the last ten weeks of the year. This pattern continued through 1968—weekly case rates were consistently above the median for 1963-67 and the cumulative total, week after week, was above the corresponding total for 1967. Through out the spring, relatively high incidence in British Columbia, Ontario and Newfoundland counteracted the usual seasonal decline.
