— 312 — SALMONELLA SURVEILLANCE F r e n c h G u i a n a . — From Monday, 27 April, to Wednesday, 29 April 1970, 41 cases of an acute dysentery-like syndrome accom panied, in 50% of the cases, by a rash and by a temperature of 104°F with rachialgia, myalgia and severe headache, and in some cases nausea, were observed in a group of military men and their families in Cayenne. All of the 17 fecal examinations performed resulted in isolation of a strain of Salmonella enteritidis (identification made at the International Salmonella Reference Centre, Pasteur Institute, Paris). The epidemiological investigation indicated that the infec tion was acquired apparently from contaminated food, probably eggs used in the preparation of certain dishes served on Sunday, 26 April. The organism was found to be sensitive to chloramphenicol. Therapy based on this antibiotic brought about rapid recession of the fever and general symptoms. Profound asthenia followed the acute disease and lasted for eight days.

SURVEILLANDE DES SALMONELLA G u y a n e f r a n ç a ise .
