Ebola: the virus and the disease A special supplement to the Journal of infectious diseases with the above title was published in February 1999. It is one of the single most comprehensive current publications about Ebola haemorrhagic fever. Ebola epidemics are severe, yet occur infrequently. There are therefore only limited opportunities to gain new insight into the epidemiology and clinical picture of the disease. In order to review the findings obtained during the 1995 epidemic in Kikwit, Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) and to report new research on the subject, an international colloquium was co-organized in 1996 by the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Antwerp, Belgium) and the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, Maryland, United States), with the support of the Commission of the European Communities (Brussels, Belgium), the World Health Organization (Geneva, Switzerland) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Atlanta, Georgia, United States). Some of the material presented at this meeting has been used as the basis for the supplement, a concise source of available information which also identifies remaining gaps in knowledge and puts Ebola epidemics into an understandable public health context.

Ceci représente l’une des publications courantes les plus complètes au sujet de la fièvre hémorragique Ebola. Les épidémies d’Ebola sont graves, mais se produisent rarement. Les occasions d’obtenir de nouvelles données sur l’épidémiologie et les aspects cliniques de la maladie sont donc limitées. Afin d’étudier les résultats obtenus au cours de l’épidémie de 1995 à Kikwit, République démocratique du Congo (ex-Zaïre) et de rapporter les conclusions de nouvelles recherches à ce sujet, un colloque international a été organisé en 1996 conjointement par l’Institut de médecine tropicale (Anvers, Belgique) et les National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, Maryland, Etats-Unis), avec le soutien de la Commission des communautés européennes (Bruxelles, Belgique), l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé (Genève, Suisse) et les Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Atlanta, Géorgie, Etats-Unis). Une partie de la documentation présentée à cette réunion a servi de base à la préparation du supplément, une source concise de l’information disponible qui met aussi en lumière les lacunes des connaissances actuelles et place les épidémies d’Ebola dans un contexte de santé publique facilement compréhensible.
