Aerial operations: report for the month of December 1983

I,ARVICTDI}IG OIERATIOIIS Slight rai:n was recorded in the lama Kara region on 16th, 21st antl 22nd of Decenber, rare rainfall was also recorded. i.ra the south and sou.th- west of Boual<d sector. Thls rain had no lnfluence on river discharges which eontinued to be abnozr,rally low, heralding no doubt, a severe dry season. As the discharge of rivers igr Phase IV decreased, so it was possicle to change froro Chlorphoxim to -B.,_[. H-14. After the first week of .Decenber when 700.5 litree of chlorphoxim were used 1n the Sassandra, Bafing and Nzo-riverEr_no-furtlrer chlorphoxim releases were made. However for the remaining 3 treatment eycles of the month on those rlvers the Bactirnos fortulation of B.t. H-14 was used in place of [elonar. [he first oi]era- treatment with Bactinos (IlB30o4) conflrmed that this product is enly effective directly below the applicatton point and the treatroent techni- que must be itgLte by gltett. I<B3OO4 was seen to be effective at I.5 p.p.m. but the KBr1Or lot glves only a partial effect just below the application point. The fixed wiag (lorter with chJ.orphoxtu) matle its last treatnrent for the wet season on 29th I'Iovenber and thereafter aII treatnent was by heli- copter. It is very sad to harre to record th.e first fatal flyiag accid-eirt slnce the start of the Progranrme. Pilot larry Cotter lost his life in a tragic aceldent on the sota river whirst treatlng there on 2g/lr/83.
