N EISSER IA G O NO RRH O EAE PRODUCING p-LACTAMASE (PENICILLINASE)1 Australia. — Thirty-six cases of gonorrhoea caused by a fUactamase-producing strain of N . gonorrhoeae had been detected in Australia up to the beginning of September 1977.2 A continuing surveillance of the disease has been maintained and two further cases were detected between September 1977 and mid-February 1978. The first case was notified in December and the organism isolated was resistant to both ampicillin and streptomycin. Penicillinase production was detected by a chromogenic cephalosporin test. The second case occurred in January 1978 and laboratory investiga­ tion for penicillinase production was initiated when the disease failed to respond to amoxicillin. N EISSERIA G ONORRHO EAE PRODUCTRICES D E P-LACTAMASE (PENICILLINASE)1 A ustralie. — Au 1er septembre 1977, * on avait noté en Austra­ lie 36 cas de gonococcie dus à des souches de N . gonorrhoeae pro­ ductrices de p-lactamase. Une surveillance continue ayant été main­ tenue, deux autres cas ont été dépistés de septembre 1977 au milieu de février 1978. Pour le premier, notifié en décembre, le gonocoque isolé était résistant à la fois à l'ampicilline et à la streptomycine; la production de pénicillinase a été mise en évidence par la réaction chromogène à la céphalosporine. Pour le second, observé en jan­ vier 1978, la recherche en laboratoire de la production de pénicilli­ nase a été entreprise parce que la maladie ne réagissait pas à l’amoxi­ cilline.
