A decline in influenza incidence was reported on 2 March in Czechoslovakia (peak during the second week of February in Slovakia and during the third and fourth weeks in the Czech pro vinces, mostly A/USSR/90/77 (H1N1) and a few strains of A/Texas/ 1/77 (H3N2)), on 4 March in the German Democratic Republic (peak: early February, mostly A/USSR/90/77 (H1N1) and a few strains of A (H3N2) similar to A/Victoria or A/Texas) and on 18 March in Italy (peak in February, A/USSR/90/77 (H1N1) and A (H3N2), mostly A/Texas). A small localized influenza out break was, however, observed around 7 March in a military camp (15 clinical cases out of 140 recruits, with three isolations of virus A/USSR/90/77 (H1N1)).
