SURVEILLANCE O F FOODBORNE OUTBREAKS F r a n c e . — 1 An outbreak of about 30 cases of botulism was reported in December 1978 in the Department of Loire. It was associated with the consumption of cheeses coming from the same dairy. Evidence of toxin B was obtained from the patients and from some of the cheeses examined. Although two severe cases were observed,no death was registered. U n t ie d K in g d o m . — A large outbreak of gastrointestinal illness, mainly diarrhoea, associated with Campylobacter was reported in January 1979 in Grampian, Scotland. At least 200 persons were affected. On epidemiological grounds, milk appeared to be a likely source of infection. Campylobacter sp. was isolated from over 100 patients and from a milk filter. The presence of this organism is now frequently identified in the United Kingdom, where it appears to play an important role in the aetiology of acute enteric infections. 1See No. 7. p. 55.

SURVEILLANCE DES POUSSÉES D ’ORIGINE ALIMENTAIRE F r a n c e . R o y a u m e -U n i . 1 Voir N" 7, p. 55.
