POLIOMYELITIS N eiherl ^ nds. — In early August a seven-year-old boy was reported to be suffering from paralytic poliomyelitis. Poliovirus type 3 was isolated from the faeces of the patient as well as the six other children of the family, none of whom had been vacci nated. About sLx weeks later, on 21 September, a second case o f paralytic poliomyelitis was reported in another locality and again poliovirus type 3 was isolated. Neither the 17-year-old patient nor the two other children in the family had been vacci nated. An epidemiological investigation of the source of infec tion in each instance is being undertaken but no relation between the cases has been established. It was determined that the general vaccination status of the population in the two localities concerned was satisfactory and therefore no specific vaccination campaign was carried out.
