A second strain o f influenza A(H3N2) was isolated in May from a sporadic case in Melbourne. WHO C o l l a b o r a t in g C e n t r e s t o r R e f e r e n c e a n d R e se a r c h o n I n f l u e n z a , A t l a n t a a n d L o n d o n . — Since the end of April 19831 a further 178 strains of influenza A(H3N2) virus have been investigated. Most were from the 1982-1983 season in the northern hemisphere. Of the 178 strains 93 (52%) were A/Belgium/2/81-like. Fifty-four (30%) reacted poorly m haemagglutination inhibition tests with sera prepared against A/Belgium/2/81 and the other current H3N2 variants; of these 5 4 strains 43 were clearly A/Philippines/2/82-like and among them were the first H3N2 virus isolated in Australia this year (see above), most of the isolates from Asia and 18% of those from Europe. Thirty-one isolates were either A/Bangkok/1/79, A/Bangkok/2/79 or A/Texas/l/77-like, Thirty-five isolates of influenza A(H1N1) virus have also been investigated since the end of April. Of these, 33 were from 8 European countries and 1 each from Ecuador and Singapore. Twenty-four iso lates were characterized as near, but not identical, to A/India/6263/80. Seven strains, isolated in Bulgaria and Greece, were A/USSR/90/77-like and the remaining 4, including the 2 non-Euro pean isolates, were A/England/333/80-like. Of 27 strains o f influenza B virus isolated, 4 were characterized as B/Hannover/13/78-hke. The remaining were typical, or low avid, representatives of the B/Singapore/222/79 variant. Lors de la caractérisation par le Centre collaborateur OMS de réference et de recherche pour la grippe de Londres, la souche s’est révélée analogue à A/Philippines/2/82. Une deuxième souche du virus gnppal A(H3N2) a été isolée en mai chez un cas sporadique à Melbourne. Sur ces 178 souches, 93 (52%) étaient analogues à A/Belgium/2/81. Cinquante-quatre (30%) ont réagi faiblement aux épreuves d’inhibi tion de l’hémagglutination à l’aide de sérums dirigés contre A/Belgium/2/81 et les autres variants communs H3N2 ; sur ces 54 souches, 43 étaient manifestement analogues à A/Philippines/2/82, dont le premier virus H3N2 isolé en Australie cette année (voir plus haut), la plupart des souches venant d’Asie et 18% de celles d’Europe. Trente et un isolements étaient analogues à A/Bangkok/1/79, à A/Bang kok/2/79 où à A/Texas/1/77. On a aussi étudié, depuis la fin d’avril, 35 isolements de virus A(H1N1): 33 provenant de 8 pays européens, 1 de l’Equateur et 1 de Singapour. Vingt-quatre étaient étroitement apparentés, mais non identiques, à A/Indta/6263/80. Sept, obtenus en Bulgarie et en Grèce, étaient analogues à A/USSR/90/77 et les 4 autres, dont les 2 d’ongine non européenne, analogues à A/England/333/80. A u s t r a l ie
