Technical and health matters 5.1 Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, hantavirus, and Alkhurma haemorrhagic fever, as emerging infectious diseases
Request by a Member State. Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus and hantaviruses cause haemorrhagic fevers; the viruses are endemic in many countries and spreading in others. Their outbreaks challenge public health services, but the issues that arise are similar to those for other emerging zoonoses (for instance, Ebola haemorrhagic fever, disease due to Nipah virus infection, and severe acute respiratory syndrome). The report considers how the international community, the Secretariat and WHO’s partners in the United Nations system can provide support to countries in better prediction, prevention, detection and containment of these dangerous pathogens.
5.2
Cholera: mechanism for control and prevention
Request by a Member State. This report provides information on the magnitude of cholera as a public health problem, and the role that lack of access to safe water and sanitation play as underlying factors. Efficient control measures including oral cholera vaccines are described. The report calls for a coordinated multidisciplinary approach to prevention, preparedness and response, together with an efficient surveillance system.
5.3
Child injury prevention
Request by a Member State. The impact of child injury on child health and survival has been largely neglected to date. However, child injury is a major and preventable public health problem. The World report on child injury prevention provides recommendations to address child injury, and the Secretariat report and draft resolution provide concrete means to act upon these.
