POLIOMYELITIS SURVEILLANCE Netherlands (31 August). — The outbreak of poliomyelitis previously reported1 seems to be fading out. A total of 104 cases has been reported. Nine cases were reported with onset of sym ptoms in April, 16 in May, 58 in June, 12 in July and nine in August. None had been vaccinated and all belonged to groups of a society that rejects vaccination because of religious beliefs. Cases have been reported from six provinces of the country. The epidemic has caused one fatal case, a premature infant, and paralysis in 74 cases. The paralysis has mostly been spinal but bulbar and spino-bulbar forms have also been reported. The diagnosis has been confirmed in the laboratory by isolation of wild poliovirus type 1 in 97 cases. •See No. 25, p. 1S7, No. 27, p. 198 and No. 30, p. 222.
