— 26 — LA GRIPPE DANS LE MONDE: PÉRIODE OCTOBRE 1967 — SEPTEMBRE 1968 (suite) INFLUENZA IN THE WORLD: PERIOD OCTOBER 1967 — SEPTEMBER 1968 (contd.) The influenza year 1967-68 has to be divided into two phases: the first was characterized by the presence of strains of virus A2 similar to those of 1966-67, and the second by the presence of strains similar to the A2/Hong Kong/68 virus, whose antigenic compo sition differs considerably from previous strains of virus A2.

PHASE I Epidemiological data In the northern hemisphere, a first wave of influenza, in essence associated with A2 viruses close to the variants of previous years, started in October 1967 and developed mostly in January and February 1968; it involved 36 countries or territories. This first wave was on the whole below average extent; it attacked a large part of the population only in Niedersachsen (Federal Republic o f Germany) and in Hungary. The influenza wave which occurred subsequently in the southern hemisphere was of moderate extent. It occurred mostly from April to August. Here again the disease was generally associated with virus A2. Virus B was rarely associated with the first phase of the “influenza year” . It was mostly found in Perth, Australia, and in countries in the Pacific: Fiji, Taiwan (China), Hawaii, the British Columbia in Canada, and Japan (after virus A2) were successively involved.

Antigenic characteristics of the viruses Virus A2 Some of the A2 viruses isolated during this phase are antigenically similar to the variant which appeared in 1962 and 1963, and became general in 1964 (A2/England/12/64 or A2/Netherlands/ 65/63, or A2/Japan/170/62). Most of them, however, are similar to the A2/Tokyo/3/67 strain, and, like this variant, show a slight shift away from the earlier, variants, although clear affinities exist. Virus B The viruses B isolated during this phase are usually antigenically close to the variant of recent years (B/Switzerland/265/67 or B/ Rome/1/67 or B/Massachusetts/3/66). Virus C C viruses isolated in South Africa in 1968 appear to form an antigenically homogeneous group, distinct both from the original C/1233/Taylor strain and from the recently isolated C/Paris/1/67 strain, which also showed a shift from the Taylor strain.

PHASE H Epidemiological data The second phase originated in Hong Kong where half a million cases occurred in the second half of July due to the A2/Hong Kong/ 68 virus. This virus reached Singapore at the beginning of August, and later in the same month, Malaysia, the Republic o f Viet-Nam, the Philippines and Taiwan (China). In September, infection reached Madras, Bombay, Thailand and some areas in Australia. It also reach ed Iran, probably originating in the International Congresses of Tro pical Medicine and Malaria. In addition, travellers by air and sea carried the infection to Japan and the United States o f America, where however the foci of the disease remained localized until September. Two localized foci were also reported in the United Kingdom. Although the period covered by the present summary is theoretically limited to 30 September 1968, it is worth reporting that in October and November the first large epidemics associated with the A2/Hong Kong/68 variant have appeared in the United States.

Reciprocal haemagglutination inhibition tests comparing the variant A2/Hong Kong/68 with earlier A2 variants indicate a magni tude of dissimilarity which was not previously observed within the A2 sub-type. Nevertheless, the Hong Kong variant has been classified as virus A2: all isolates were readily identified with the WHO reference A2 polyvalent antisera, and the antisera A2/Hong Kong/68 demonstrate a certain antigenic relationship with the earlier A2 viruses.
