Influenza Chile (28 November 1997).1 Cases of influenza A(H3N2) continued to be diagnosed during October and November in a moderate outbreak which started in Santiago in August. Cases of influenza A were also reported in the northern, central and southern parts of the country. France (10 December 1997).2 A local outbreak of influenza A(H3N2) has been reported in the northern part of the country. Sporadic activity, mainly of influenza B, has been reported in other parts of the country this season. Sweden (12 December 1997).3 Influenza A was diagnosed in 3 cases in different parts of the country in the past 2 weeks. Two viruses have been further subtyped, 1 as influenza A(H3N2) and 1 as influenza A(H1N1). United States of America (12 December 1997).4 By the first week of December influenza had been confirmed in 27 states and the District of Columbia. Influenza A accounted for 97% of the laboratory-confirmed cases and all isolates further subtyped were H3N2. Influenza B has been reported in 3 states. 1 2

Grippe Chili (28 novembre 1997).1 Des cas de grippe A(H3N2) ont continué d’être diagnostiqués en octobre et en novembre durant une flambée modérée qui a débuté en août à Santiago. Des cas de grippe A ont aussi été rapportés dans les parties septentrionale, centrale et méridionale du pays. France (10 décembre 1997).2 Une flambée locale de grippe A(H3N2) a été signalée dans le nord du pays. Influenza A(H5N1) Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China (17 December 1997).1 Three further cases of influenza A(H5N1) have been confirmed, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 7. Two suspected cases are under investigation. Two of these 9 cases were fatal, 2 have fully recovered while the other 5 remain hospitalized. Two recent cases were in young children with mild symptoms who are cousins of one of the confirmed cases. 1

Grippe A(H5N1) Hong Kong, Région administrative spéciale de la Chine (17 décembre 1997).1 Trois autres cas de grippe A(H5N1) ont été confirmés, portant le nombre total des cas confirmés à 7. Deux cas suspects sont en train d’être étudiés. Deux de ces 9 cas ont été mortels, 2 se sont complètement rétablis, tandis que les 5 autres sont toujours hospitalisés. Cholera in Uganda The Ministry of Health has reported an outbreak of cholera in Kampala City where 70 cases and 3 deaths have occurred since 9 December. An outbreak has also been reported in Bugiri District (Busoga Province) which is approximately 145 km from Kampala. The number of cases is not yet known although 26 deaths have been reported. A task force has been formed under the Ministry of Health to organize control measures. Two temporary treatment centres have been set up in Kampala and a mobile team has been despatched to Bugiri District.

Le choléra en Ouganda Le Ministère de la Santé a signalé une flambée de choléra à Kampala, où 70 cas et 3 décès sont survenus depuis le 9 décembre. Une flambée a aussi été signalée dans le district de Bugiri (province de Busoga), à environ 145 km de Kampala. On ne connaît pas encore le nombre de cas, bien que 26 décès aient été signalés. Un groupe spécial a été formé sous l’autorité du Ministère de la Santé pour instituer des mesures de lutte. Deux centres de traitement temporaires ont été mis sur pied à Kampala et une équipe mobile a été envoyée dans le district de Bugiri.
