The outbreak peaked between 12 February and 18 March and has since declined. Viscerotomy specimens from S fatal cases were histologically compatible with yellow fever. Transmission was by Haemagagus mosquitos in the couôtryside, and by Aides aegypti along the main road, where localities are infested by Aides, with house indexes ranging from 7.2% to 37%. Control measures taken included obligatory vaccination, 10 days in advance, of all travellers to the area, and vaccination of the population in the area, which achieved a coverage of 85%. In the cities of Santa Cruz and Montero, which are infested by Ae. aegypti and at risk for the introduction of th e disease, it is estimated that 80% and 70%, respectively, of the populations have been vaccinated in the last 3 years, and vaccination is available for the remainder. The population of Santa Cruz is being mobilized to destroy potential Aides breeding places or treat them with 1% abate. Ultra-low-volume spraying with malathion is also being carried out.
