However, al1 avalLable epldeulologlcal- data, lncludlng the results for the cohort of cborn before the start of control, indlcate a qulte hlgh 1eve1 otransolssLon durlng the past 6 years, and it is unrt['Qry that t epldeutologlcal results can be ex-plalned by the loca1 control p of 1981 a1one. More 11ke1y 1s a recurrent probleu of 1oca1 tran along thls affluent, a problem whlch has matntalned onchocercla serlous publlc health problem in this vlllage and po6stbly has contrlbuted to transmlsslon over a wlder area. 14. Quite dlfferent 1s the "Jt,r.tlon'1n the vlllage Pendle, whfch lfsone of the Bost closely folloCed-up vl11ages'1n the OCP, wlth flve detalled surveys durlng an 11 year control period. Transmission ha deflnltely taken place, and the epldeulological data suggest that has probably malnly occurred after the year L979. Ilowever, contraryl to Goreba-Somun, the eptdemLological sltuatlon ln Pendle has lnproved constderably over the last 1O years and ,the last ophthaluologlcal exanLnatto,n suggests that a signlflcant degree of dleiaee control been achleved ln thls v111age even though transmlssion has natntalnled an luportant reseirvoir of lnfection. 15.
