Meningococcal meningitis S o u th A frica. T he annual num ber of notified cases of meningococcal meningitis over the period 1983 to May 1993 is shown in Table 1. This num ber reached a peak in 1989 and has subsequently shown a consistent decline. N otified deaths also reached a maximum in 1989, although the num bers between 1990 and 1992 have rem ained fairly constant. This has led to an increase in the case-fatality rate, from an average of 11.0% for the years 1983 to 1991, to 16.3% m 1992. Thus far in 1993, the case-fatality rate is of the same m agnitude as last year.

Ce nom bre est passé par u n pic en 1989 et n ’a cessé de reculer depuis. Le nom bre de décès déclarés a également atteint son maximum en 1989, encore que les chiffres soient restés relativement constants entre 1990 et 1992, représentant un accroissement du taux de létalité, qui est passé de 11,0% en moyenne pour les années 1983 à 1991 à 16,3% en 1992. Jusqu’ici, le taux de létalité pour 1993 est du même ordre de grandeur que l’année précédente.
